Located on the southwestern coast of Guangdong Province and rich in fishery resources, Yangjiang City is a major fishery city in Guangdong usually known as ‘Fish Warehouse in Guangdong’. Yangjiang City had ranked NO.1 in the province in total output of aquatic products in the successive 9 years. In 2010, the total output reached 1,004,200 tons, increase by 0.25% than last year, the total value of aquatic product is RMB 8.569 billion, increased by 11.09%; And the export value of aquatic product reached about USD 463 million, ranking the second in Guangdong Province. The output of fishery economy reached RMB 11.579 billion, increased by 5.41% than last year. Aquatic product per-captia is 370 kg, which ranks on top in Guangdong Province. It is estimated that the total aquatic production value of the city would reach 2.15 million, which increased by 31% than last year. The total population of the coastal counties (districts) is 1.657 million. There are now 14 coastal towns (offices) with a fishing population of 1. 667 million and 7 fishing harbors, namely Zhapo, Dongping, Shapa, Xitou, Hebei, Duian and Jiangcheng, of which, Zhapo and Dongping are the state-level central fishing ports, Shapa Fishing Ports is listed in national level A fishing ports, thus Yangjiang owns the most state-level fishing ports among the prefecture-level cities in Guangdong. Furthermore, Xitou and Dui’an fishing ports are under the evaluation procedure for raise to state-level central fishing ports. In November 2011, Yangjiang and Yangxi County are appraised respectively as ‘China Capital of Oyster’ and ‘China Hometown of Oyster; Hailing Island is one of the first be appraised as ‘national Ocean Park’, therefore, our city is with great potentials and advantages to develop marine industries.
I. Rich in marine fishery resources
In our city there are coastlines totaled 458.6km long, including 323.5 km of mainland coastlines and 135.1 km of coastlines on 40 islands. The island coastlines and the mainland coastlines respectively rank the second and the third in the whole province. The sea area is about 12, 300 sq. km., the area of shallow sea and beaches within 20m isobath is about 1, 624 sq. km. of which the area of shallow sea within 10m isobath is 620 sq. km. and the area of beaches is 131 sq. km. Numerous rivers crisscross within the territory of the city, including 5 main rivers flowing into the sea. The coastal ecological environment of great diversity and 8, 000 mu of mangrove forests provide ideal places for fishes and shrimps to propagate and grow. 105 kinds of marine fish species with economic value have been found, and among which more than 20 species can be used for culture. There is rich fresh water resource in the inland area, and the water area available for the development of aquaculture is about 200 sq. km.
II Base for aquiculture has been established
At present, the aquaculture in Yangjiang City has formed a relatively large development scale. The total area of aquaculture has reached 39, 600 hectares, including 24, 400 hectares of sea water fishery that accounting for 23% of the total area of shallow sea and beaches. The output of cultured production has reached 522, 000 tons. A new diversified culture pattern has been created, mainly engaging in the culture of shrimp, oysters, tegillarca granosas, perna viridis, clams and marine fishes, in combination with breeding, nursing and the maintenance as well as gradual development and utilization of the areas on water surface, in water, on seabed along the coast. A number of bases for aquaculture have been set up, among which the ones with relatively larger size include Hailing Bay Shallow Sea Base for Oysters Hanging Culture with Piled Frames, Zhapo Bay Base for Net-Cage Culture, Jiangcheng Base for Tegillarca Culture as well as Jiangcheng Base, Yangxi Base and Yangdong Base for Shrimp Culture, and etc. Species cultured with net-cages mainly include grouper, Sparidae fish, cobia, American redfish and etc., among which, the annual output of grouper has amounted to 7, 381 tons, weever 5, 912 tons, cobia 2, 831 tons, American redfish 2, 884 tons. Yet, oysters’ cultivation has become the eye-catching industry, respectively forming Hailing Bay Base with an area of 2, 580 hectares and Beijin Base with an area of 1,000 hectares and the annual output has reached 287, 000 tons. In addition, the nursing and multiplication species living in the sediment also include potamocorbula laevis, hard clam, Scapharca subcrenata, Tegillarca granosa, Diphos Sanguin and etc. The objects of multiplication and nursing at shallow reef sites mainly include echinoderms like purple sea urchins, sea cucumbers and etc., and seashell like Turbinidae, abalone and etc.
In recent years, the culture mode based on higher-place ponds has been vigorously promoted in Yangjiang area, its development tendency is very rapid there are 1, 400 hectares of high water level fishery pools in Yangjiang, some high standard modern high water level fishery pool such as Yangxi Aobo etc. have been set up. Xingzhou Aquatic Products Farm and Yangxi Kangshun Prawn Farm are appraised as province-level farm, and it has set up a large-scale in Guangdong Guangken Yangjiang Fine Breed Breeding Center with annual output of 3 billion prawns. Till April 2010, there are 42 aquaculture farms and among which, 3 have been awarded as provincial-level farms. So far, the annual output of fry surpasses 1, 100 fishes, occupying one third of the total in Guangdong and becoming a key fry base. Pinggang Farm, Yangjiang Jinkaiyuan Aquaculture Development Co., Ltd., Yangxi Hengxing Group, Hailing Island Bases for Aquaculture, Nanyang fishery Company have been successively established, which are all highly standardized, concentrated continuous culture bases for shrimps and tilapias.
A freshwater area of 15, 200 hectares is used for aquiculture and the output of freshwater aquaculture production has reached 87,000 tons, mainly including species like tilapia, eel, grass carp, bighead carp, silver carp, Thailand mud fish, mullet, grouper, soft-shelled turtle, moray eel, raw fish, seven-star fish (channa asiatica), rosenbergii and etc.
Ⅲ.The highest ocean fishing capacity in Guangdong
The power and operation of one single fishing boat in our city rank the first in the whole province. At present, there are total 6, 935 ocean-fishing motor boats in the city, equipped with a total power of 424, 900 kilowatts, covering all kinds of operation methods like trawling, seining, fishing with gill net and etc. In order to achieve the goat of safety, energy-saving and high efficiency for ocean fishery industry, steel-made fishing boats has reached 258 with the total power of 80,531 kilowatts. Three-in-one advanced fishing-aid navigation equipments comprising Global Navigation Satellite System, sea chart and fish detection have been widely equipped for fishing boats with high power (power of 147 kilowatts and above). Over 700 fishing boats often operate in deep/medium seas, with a power accounting for more than 70% of total power of the fishing vessels in the whole city. There are in total 43 ocean going and Naisha Island production ships in the city.Ocean fishery production has reached 363, 000 tons, ranking NO.1 in Guangdong Province. Yangjiang's marine industry has a solid foundation for development and relatively perfect conditions for further development. The marine industry focused on ocean fishery develops rapidly, which has become the pillar industry of the national economy. In the future, we will focus on developing the culture of shrimp, oysters, high-quality seawater/freshwater fishes and ocean fishing in order to form a featured fishery brand as soon as possible. We encourage foreign investors to develop marine product processing and develop marine chemical industry, bio-pharmaceuticals, health-care products, cosmetics and other projects that can lead a group of deep processing projects.
